Many PS3 repairs can be made necessary by problems in relation to the overheating of the Playstation 3 console. Unfortunately heat is one of the most common causes of damage to PS3′s (or any complex electrical devices, come to that), and is incredibly hard to stop due to the nature of electricity.
The main issue with excess heat is that it can potentially cause massive damage to the circuitry inside the PS3 console. As are most modern circuits, the majority of the circuits inside the Playstation 3 console are printed onto plastic boards. While designed to withstand heat, over time the boards can warp or bend if you use your Playstation console often, and this can cause the circuits printed onto the plastic to break or short out. This in turn can cause other issues if power diverts into parts of the system which shouldn’t be powered, or supplying too much power for the circuit and causing damage in that way.
Unfortunately, heat can also have terrible effects on the components that create it – primarily the CPU and GPU chips inside the PS3 console. A PS3 fix can become necessary if either of these chips overheat. While there are safe-guards in place to prevent these components in the PS3 overheating, they are not a completely perfect solution. The limited space inside the console means that the heatsinks on the processor and graphics chip have to be relatively small compared to PC counterparts. However much planning and effort goes into the design of the console components, there are bound to be some faults purely due to the nature of compact nature and the amount of use that some PS3 consoles get.
I’m sad to say that there is generally no guaranteed PS3 fix if your console has been suffering from overheating. Reflowing the motherboard may help, but it may not, along with the multitude of other fixes that are out there.
However, there are steps that you can take to try and prevent your console overheating before it happens. Firstly, ensure that your console is not allowed too much contact with dust. If your console is exposed to too much dust, it will coat the fans and internal components, trapping heat and not allowing the fans to work at their full efficiency. Also try and ensure that the console is in plenty of space – having flowing air around the console will mean that heat can be transported out of the console efficiently, and will not accumulate in a confined space.
